We just got done talking with Twins CBO Derek Falvey and GM Thad Levine. Couple of impressions one day after the talk was dominated by Brian Dozier.
For starters, with Chris Sale going to the Red Sox in exchange for a group of coveted prospects, the landscape of the American League Central shifted. Falvey has seen Sale plenty of the years while the former was with the Cleveland Indians. The Twins have had some moderate success against him, relative to other teams, but it's still a significant deal in that it signifies the South Siders will rebuild. Some are wondering if that means guys like Jose Abreu, Todd Frazier or even Adam Eaton could be dealt. Falvey was so politically correct with his reaction to that trade that I think his reaction was "It's a big deal with probably a lot of opinions on both sides." The guy could run for office!
Also had a chance to meet the Twins' new scouting director today, Sean Johnson. He replaces Deron Johnson, who's been moved to a senior advisor role in the scouting department. Obviously it's hard to tell anything from a 20-minute conversation with someone, but Sean Johnson strikes me as a sharp guy, and he talked about working data analysis into the team's scouting systems. He's got a scouting background under Deron Johnson, Mike Radcliff, et al, and he's not afraid of data -- and he reads Malcolm Gladwell! He'll have a big job in the next 6 months, as the Twins try to determine who they'll pick with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft.
